ok, so i started to drive short distances around labor day... meaning i'd drive to and from kate's - no farther. sometimes just to oakhurst and back. my car is a little tougher than kate's (automatic). today i drove to work, which involved getting on the highway. it was excellent. driving is definitely easier than a few weeks ago. i wouldn't be comfortable driving more than about 15-20 miles, though. some other things i have noticed are: that i feel ok about putting a shoe on my right foot now (first time was over this past weekend). i can sleep for awhile on my side (either side) as of a week or two ago. i can use my right foot for balance by placing it down on the ground without any weight (as of a few weeks ago). i can even shift a little bit of weight over to my right foot - it results in the tingly foot feeling, and my knee doesn't completely feel stable, but i don't get any pain. i only started testing this a couple days ago. showers have gotten easier since i can somewhat bend my knee. i'm much more agile on the crutches (opening and closing doors, carrying one thing that isn't an glass of liquid, moving around a crowded room). i can be a limited-motion non-sterile assistant in the surgery suite if necessary (today, wednesday, and next monday). mom makes some really good food. sometimes i wake up in the middle of the night and my knee aches - mostly on the medial side. last night when i woke up in the middle of the night, there was a tingling sensation on the lateral side that kinda required me to itch it. maybe some nerve endings were trying to grow back together there. where's my nerve cuff when i need one? i've also observed that my wrists and shoulders are really feeling the consequences of the non-weight-bearing status. muscles feel tight; joints hurt a little; calluses are forming on my palms. the left knee is feeling a little overuse, too... patellar tendon aches some. overall, i'm ready for the crutches to be gone and independence to be mine. only a little while longer. oh, and i'm getting fat. dammit.
